The Evolution of Pharmacy
Madeline recalls the time when pharmacists operated manual typewriters to label prescriptions. "Back then, if you needed a refill, you either had to bring your bottle or know your number," she reflects. This inefficiency was a major hurdle for pharmacists, and it set the stage for the technological advancements that would follow.
Today, pharmacists are involved in immunizations, chronic disease management, and antimicrobial stewardship, saving healthcare systems significant costs. However, Madeline emphasizes a crucial point: "Pharmacists are still mostly paid for products rather than the cognitive services they provide."
A Personal Journey
Madeline’s path to pharmacy was atypical. Initially pursuing a degree in computer science, she found herself programming systems for drug wholesalers. "I loved it. Computers were just starting to come to market," she recalls. This unique background would later position her to integrate technology with pharmacy practice.
"When I saw what hospital pharmacists did, I thought, I could merge my computer science with my pharmacy."
Her experience working with retailers to automate pharmacy systems opened her eyes to the inefficiencies in hospital settings. "When I saw what hospital pharmacists did, I thought, I could merge my computer science with my pharmacy," she explains. This realization shaped her career and her passion for improving pharmacy practices.
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
As we celebrate American Pharmacist Month, Madeline urges her colleagues to reflect on the profession's journey and its future.
"We need to be compensated for our cognitive services; it's time to link our contributions to measurable outcomes," she advocates. The potential for pharmacists to contribute significantly to healthcare is immense, yet it requires a shift in how their value is perceived and compensated.
A Call to Action
Madeline’s story is not just about her personal achievements but also a call for the pharmacy profession to evolve further. With her engineering mindset, she encourages pharmacists to continue pushing boundaries and advocating for their roles in the healthcare system. As she puts it, "We can't stand still; we need to move forward."
Madeline’s journey encapsulates the past, present, and future of pharmacy, reminding us that while we have come a long way, there is still much work to be done.
